Hospital price transparency compliance and enforcement

Will Dr. Oz Increase Price Transparency Enforcement?

A recent review by Patient Rights Advocate raises serious questions about hospital compliance with federal price transparency rules. According to the report:

• Only 21% of hospitals fully comply with the rules.

• Compliance has dropped significantly from 34.5% in February of this year.

• CMS enforcement appears lax, with only one penalty issued in 2024.

Hospitals have been required since 2021 to publicly post price lists for treatments and services to help patients make informed decisions. But with nearly 46% of hospitals noncompliant, according to an HHS audit, a majority are shirking their obligations.

Here’s the question:
If Dr. Mehmet Oz, the new CMS administrator, focuses on this issue, will he push for stricter enforcement of these rules?

What do you think? Should we expect more aggressive action to ensure transparency for patients?
