Medicare certifications are not interchangeable
I've heard agents say the two industry-leading Medicare certifications are interchangeable. Both meet the CMS training requirement, so pick either one.
I see it differently, and the difference that matters most has nothing to do with price.
Disclosure first. I chair NABIP's National Legislative Council, so read this knowing where I sit.
AHIP does some good work, and its certification is the industry standard for a reason. More carriers accept it. But AHIP is a trade association for insurers. When it advocates, it advocates for health plans.
NABIP's members are agents, brokers, and consultants. When NABIP walks into a congressional office or a CMS comment period, it's arguing for fair compensation and for the principle that professional advice makes Medicare work better for seniors. NABIP advocates for you.
The NABIP Medicare, Medicare Products and FWA Certification costs $100 with CE credits included, filed in all 50 states and DC. It's accepted by 66 carriers and counting for the 2027 plan year. Check your carrier list before you buy either option.
Both certifications qualify you for the 2027 season, but only one supports an organization whose whole job is advocating for you.
Keep that in mind when you’re deciding which certification to choose.
