PCORI and Form 5500: two July 31 deadlines

Originally posted by

RxDC submissions were due June 1. That’s done. The next two health and welfare deadlines both land July 31, at least for calendar-year plans.

PCORI and the Form 5500.

Different filings, same trap. The date isn’t what trips plans up. It’s the data, and who owns the filing.

PCORI is the per-covered-life fee, paid to the IRS on Form 720. The 5500 is the annual report on the plan. Neither is hard. Both reward starting now instead of scrambling in late July.

I’ll talk about each in more detailed posts this week, because the details are where plans slip. PCORI has a scope question that catches more employers than people expect. The 5500 starts with one of its own: whether you even have to file.

For today, the job is easy. Ask:

Who owns each filing? Is the data they need already in hand, or are we still waiting on a vendor?

Better to know that this week than on July 28.

Are yours buttoned up already? (Most aren’t.)
