What we pay for care: the concept that unlocks medical spending

Originally posted by

One of the most impactful concepts in addressing our out of control medical spending is understanding what we as a society are paying for.

We are willing spend so much to take care of people who show up at an emergency room, but far less willing to keep people from ever showing up at the hospital in the first place.

The American Healthcare Paradox explores this - look at the chart below and you will see that we spend far more of our GDP on medical care, but when you add social services to medical care, we aren’t the top spender by % of GDP.

Is there a better way to spend our money as a nation?
